July 2004
The installation of a Polar 78ED at Challenger Print in Auckland has considerably sped up the cutting operation
of the Onehunga-based company.
Sourced and installed by APM, the 2002 model Polar exceeded the expectations of Challenger’s Gary Cox.
Gary says he thought about investing in a new guillotine, but found that the Polar 78ED from APM was just what
the doctor ordered, and at the right price. He says that APM’s price on the Polar device “blew the new machines
out of the water”.
The device is spec’d higher than Challenger anticipated, including a side air table and auto cutting system down
to 50mm, which is ideal for the company’s substantial business card trade.
“It is as highly automated as a guillotine can be,” Gary says. “It has certainly sped up production.”
While Challenger Print had never done business with APM before, Gary says that he knew of the company, and was
impressed be their response times when he went looking for the new guillotine.
“I approached several difference agencies but APM was the first back with the best deal. They outshone the others
and gave us good pricing and a good trade-in.”
“I’m more than happy with what we bought.”
Challenger Print had previously been using an older Wohlenberg guillotine, but decided that it was time for a
faster, more accurate machine. When Gary let dealers know what the company wanted, APM got back to him with the
Polar 78Ed within the week.
The new cutter is 50 percent faster its predecessor and Gary says that it is giving a superior cut, with more
accuracy and repeatability than before, as well as delivering considerable time savings. Gary says the service from
APM has been good since the installation, fulfilling his expectations.
Apart from its business card work, Challenger turns out a lot of corporate stationery and short run work, mostly
in A3 format. As such, the more compact Polar 78 was exactly the right fir for the company.
Challenger has operated out of the same premises in the heart of Onehunga for the last 14 years, and the investment
in the new Polar cutter represents another step forward for the company. It has platemaking, stitching and collating
capability in house to go along with its printing and cutting facilities.
All of the existing machinery from the beginnings of Challenger has now been turned over, but the polar 78ED can
be expected to hang around for a while yet.
