APM Brokerage Deal Beats Budget for BPG
August 2004

As part of its recent major plant upgrade, Business Printing Group was looking to buy two offset presses to replace three of its ageing models. But when it bought the first of these presses, a brand new eight-colour, it found its budget severely squeezed for the second press.

It went looking for a press that could fulfil it stringent quality requirements, while also fitting into its budget. From the start, it was dealing APM. Business Printing Group’s operations manager Warren Herbert says that he was impressed with the service from the time the company first let it be known they wanted to upgrade.

"We were very specific with what press we wanted. We definitely wanted a coater for the added value it brings. We do a lot of UV, for example UV coating on covers, so that was very important."

After specifying exactly what it wanted, Business Printing Group watched while APM assembled an impressive array of presses that could possibly meet its needs. Once stood out above the rest, as far as the company was concerned – a 2001 Komori Lithrone L528+L. It was eventually installed and up and running at the end of July.

"APM did a bloody great job,” Warren says. “They sound us a very late model, very high spec’d press at an excellent price."

So good want the price that Business Printing Group was suspicious about the company’s reason for selling it. They checking it our, and found that the reasons for sale were legitimate, and realised that they were just getting a very good deal.

"We're very happy with the deal and we’re very please with the result," Warren says.

With budget being an important consideration, Business Printing Group took advantage of APM’s brokerage service. So APM sourced the machine and assisted in organising dismantling, packing, shipping, insurance, reinstallation and demonstration, for a brokerate fee, while Business Printing Group paid each individual supplier of these services direct.

The Komori was sourced from a printing company in Gloucestershire, England, but because Business Printing Group didn’t have the time to fly over and check out the press, APM’s Alex Peters performed this service personally.

"We sent Alex over to perform the print test," Warren says. “We gave him three files, which were all real mongrels to try and print. He left here on Monday at 11am for London and was back here at 10am on Thursday. The results were excellent and we signed the contract that afternoon."

While there have been some minor issues with the press, such as a broken hose, or a minor leak that were quickly fixed, that is part of the deal with buying used equipment, Warren says.

"Sometimes these things come up and you have to deal with them, but we think that this is magnificent value. We’re very happy with what we’ve got.

“We were surprised with the budget we had left after buying the new eight-colour, that we were able to get a press with that specification.”

In addition to providing the brokerage service on the Komori installation, APM also bought the two presses that Business Printing Group were getting rid of, a service which was appreciated.

Business Printing Group employs 120 staff and is part of the Pacific Print Group.
